• What is the ‘Wellbeing for Slough’ Directory?

Our online Directory is a ‘one-stop shop’ where you can search for and discover health, wellbeing, and social activities and services in and around Slough (or virtual), all in one place.

  • Who is the Directory for, and how can it benefit me?

This website is for anyone living in and around the Slough area who wants to better manage their own health and wellbeing. The services and activities on here are varied and inclusive. You could join a targeted fitness group which might help you to lose weight for example, or a specific social group where you can meet new people with common interests. And the list goes on.

Our Directory supports Social Prescribing, which is a form of connecting people to a variety of local community services and activities to meet their non-clinical, social needs outside of the GP surgery.

  • What kinds of services and activities can I find on here?

There are several categories of activities within our website including Adult Learning, Arts & Creative, Social Groups, Sport & Leisure, Staying Healthy and Wellbeing.

These are either local to the area of and around Slough, or online. Some are free, some paid for, and some are low cost or offer concessions.

To find out about local services, there are links to useful external websites too which include information and advice, volunteering and carers’ services.

  • How do I navigate my way through the website?

On our website homepage, you will find three different ways of finding a service or activity:

  1. Use the search engine – you can search for a key word e.g., ‘fitness’, or your postcode, and it will present you with a set of relevant search results.
  2. The category boxes – click onto a category and it will then present you with a range of relevant service or activity entries within our website. Whilst these entries will often contain all the relevant information (with a link to their website included), others are listed simply as links to their own website/external database.
  3. Search the map – you can use this to search for activities by location.

Here are a couple of useful videos.

  • Accessibility?

You can use two accessibility tools within this website:

  1. The Blue Man icon at the top of the page – if you click on this, it will allow you to choose various options such as Increase Text (size), Decrease Text, Grayscale, High Contrast, Negative Contrast, Light background, Links Underline, and Readable Font.
  2. The orange ‘Translate’ button also at the top of the page – if you click on this, it will enable you to translate the text within the site into any language.

Within as many service or activity entries as possible (those which don’t link to an external database), we have ensured providers include information on parking and accessibility at their venue, as well as a link to their own website, which might have more details.

  • How do I know if a service is legitimate?

Please see the following Disclaimer for details on responsibilities and the legitimacy of services – we have also included safety guidelines below this:

The information on this website is for general information purposes only and up to date at the time of publishing. It is the service or activity providers’ responsibility to upload their information and to update this as they see fit, however the administrator of this website reserves the right to refuse to submit a listing. We are not responsible for the outcomes of using a particular service or carrying out an activity through this Directory, or any agreements/contracts made between a service and its subscriber. It is the searcher’s responsibility to make an informed decision before selecting a service or activity.

Our Directory itself is free and safe to use. However, services or activities may charge and we would advise searchers to use the following precautionary measures before subscribing to a service or activity:

  • +  Ensure you are fit to safely carry out an activity – you may wish to consult your GP or other healthcare provider before starting a health, wellbeing, or fitness programme.
  • +  Only give out personal information if you deem it safe to do so and there are reasonable justifications for a service needing this information.
  • +  Look for the padlock logo at the beginning of their website address – this tells you if the site is secured with a digital certificate. Also look for ‘https’. The combination of the padlock logo and ‘https’ indicate that the connection between your web browser and the website server is encrypted. However, be aware that this alone does not guarantee the site is officially secure.
  • +  Do not give out personal financial information such as your card pin number or banking password.
  • +  Be careful what you download and avoid clicking on pop-up advertisements.
  • +  Keep your anti-virus software updated.
  • +  Do not rely on the above guidelines alone; remember, it is still your responsibility to stay safe using your own judgements.
